We are in the midst of the dog days of summer. So it’s only fitting to bring man’s best friend along with you on your next adventure. Here are six activities which are catered to your special buddy.
Go Off-Leash at the Beach
What’s a more quintessential summer activity than heading to the beach? Take your dog with you to soak up the sun, play in the sand and splash in the surf. Brohard Paw Park is the only beach area in Sarasota County where dogs are welcome. It has an enclosed space for safe time with pets, as well as drinking fountains, dog showers, leash posts, picnic tables and benches. Dogs are welcome to swim, play and sunbathe on the Gulf beach as well. If your dog doesn’t want to get his paws wet, Bay Front Park is a great place for a shaded on-leash stroll around the marina and bayfront.
Socialize at the Dog Park
Give your dog a little fresh air and freedom at a local dog park. Sarasota is home to several off-leash dog parks that allow pups to exercise, explore and play in a safe, fenced-in environment. Let your dog run free and frolic with other dogs at the 17th Street Paw Park and the Arlington Paw Park. They both offer drinking fountains, separate areas for large and small dogs. The 17th street has several parks nearby where you can catch a game of softball or a soccer match while your little one has the time of his life playing with friends. Arlington Paw park has jogging trails so you can get in some exercise with your little buddy.
Pamper Your Pooch
You love a good massage, so why not share one with your dog? Just like you, your dog will find relief from aches and pains. Book a session at Abundant Life Massage, and consider taking canine massage classes so you can treat your dog to some TLC any time. Sarasota is also full of excellent pet spas where your pup can clean up after a fun day out. After all, the best summer activities involve mud, sand, and water and other elements that make for one dirty dog! Wet Noses Sarasota and The Bayside Pet Resort both offer full grooming services to get your pup squeaky clean and feeling fancy.
Explore On-Leash Trails
Go on a mini-adventure with your leashed best friend on one of the many trails in Sarasota. Red Bug Slough Reserve has plenty of shaded trails and interesting smells to keep you and your dog busy for hours. Take in the reserve’s natural beauty while getting some fresh air and exercise for you and your pup. The Venetian Waterway Park, located about 30 minutes south of Sarasota, is a multi-use trail that is a perfect flat trail to explore with your dog. The trail follows along both sides of the Intracoastal Waterway and passes through a mix of an urban corridor and open green space.
It’s often said that dinner time is a great time for family bonding. Your dog is an important member of your family, and you’ll be happy to discover that Sarasota has more than 40 restaurants in Sarasota that welcome dogs for al fresco dining. The Old Salty Dog is one of the most popular spots to dine with your pup and is famous for its beer-battered hot dogs and bar eats. The restaurant has three locations on Siesta Key, City Island, and in Venice where canine visitors receive water and dog biscuits. Cafe L’Europe on St. Armand’s Circle is an iconic local eatery known for its elegant European cuisine and wines, but it is also well-loved by dog owners for its air-conditioned open patio that’s the perfect spot for you and your pooch to people watch. Wrapping up a fun day at Payne Park in downtown Sarasota? Stop by Cafe in the Park for doggy ice cream and bones.
Shop Pet-Friendly Stores
We know that you love shopping. There’s no need to leave your dog at home because Sarasota has several dog-friendly shops. Score vintages finds including clothing and antique housewares with your pup at Retro Rosie’s. Canine shoppers all receive MilkBones to chomp on! For fine treats and pet supplies visit the posh Woof Gang Bakery on St. Armand’s Circle. Dogs are welcome in the store, so Fido can pick out his own premium house-baked dog cookies and treats, and try on stylish doggie outfits and more.
