Summer is fully underway, and with fun music festivals, boat parties, tiki fests we don’t want it to end! Luckily there are plenty of exciting events happening in August. Not sure where to start? Keep reading to find out which eight local events in Sarasota we think should be on your radar!
Very Merry Jerry Day – August 6th
Put on your tie dye and get ready to rock to the tunes that helped shape American music. WSLR’s annual celebration of Jerry Garcia is called Very Merry Jerry Day and features live bands honoring The Grateful Dead by playing some of the band’s greatest hits. This year would have been Jerry’s 75th birthday! Doors open at 4:00 p.m. and the first band takes the stage on Fogartyville Patio at 5:00 p.m. General admission tickets are $15.
Pet Adopt-A-Palooza – August 5th
If you’re looking to adopt a furry friend, head to the Bradenton Area Convention Center for a howling good time at the 3rd Annual Manatee County-wide Pet Adopt-A-Palooza! Choose from over 100 adoptable pets that are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and ready for their new forever home. Manatee County license tags will be for sale, along with specialty retailers and pet vendors selling the perfect accessory for your new fur-baby. Feld Entertainment’s Monster Mutt Truck will be on site for photo opportunities as well. Admission is free, but pet toy donations are welcome!
Friday Night Free Music – August 11th
Every Friday night is cause to go out when there’s Friday Night Free Music outside! Enjoy the beautiful summer weather as Mindy Simmons performs the Gazebo in Centennial Park in downtown Venice. Bring your lawn chair or blanket and find a seat before the music starts at 7 p.m.
AquaPalooza 2017 – August 12th
Feeling the summer heat? Cool off on August 12th by joining ‘the largest party on the water’ at AquaPalooza 2017! Tie up with fellow boaters to spend a sunny afternoon enjoying music spun by a live DJ, fun games, free giveaways, and more. The party takes place on New Pass Sandbar, right in front of the MarineMax Marina.
Fishermen’s Village Tiki Fest 2017 – August 12th
The summer’s hottest party is just a short drive away! Grab a grass skirt and a tropical-themed shirt and head to Fishermen’s Village Tiki Fest 2017. This will be the town’s 2nd Annual Tiki Fest – admission is free and so is parking! Join in the fun with tiki toss and tiki bowling games, coconut painting, tiki carvings, and photo opportunities. Enjoy live music as hula dancers put on a show and ukulele performers show off their strumming skills. Feel the beat of the top-rock music and take advantage of drink and food specials all afternoon long.
Downtown Venice Wine Walk – August 17th
Vino tends to make any activity more fun, especially shopping! Which is why you should join Downtown Venice’s Wine Walk on August 17th to sip, shop, and stroll the avenues. Participating stores will offer free wine from 5-8 p.m. as you browse their merchandise and check out their specials and discounts. Check in the night of the event to get a free wristband and list of participating downtown businesses from the kiosk in Centennial Park or Breezeway on Miami Ave. End the evening at one of the participating restaurants for a delicious dinner and wine specials.
Friday Fest ‘17 – August 25th
We can’t get enough free outdoor concerts in Sarasota, and Friday Fest ’17 is one to look forward to! Enjoy an evening on the bayfront and some free live music at the 16th annual summer music fest at the Van Wezel. Treat your ears to the Jah Movement Reggae Band as they add their own touch of R&B, soul, and funk to some of the best live reggae music. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and take in the beautiful Sarasota sunset while you enjoy food and beverage from local vendors. If it happens to rain during the fest, the fun will continue inside the performing arts hall.
Manatee Village Historical Park’s Afternoon Tea – August 25th and 26th
Raise a pinky and prepare your Sunday best because you are cordially invited to Manatee Village Historical Park’s Afternoon Tea. The event will be held at Charms of Leffingwell in the heart of historic Ellenton. Hear about the history of afternoon tea in England, the popularization of afternoon tea by Queen Victoria, and tea traditions in Florida. Sip on freshly brewed hot tea and nibble on homemade scones and other pastries and treats. Wear your fanciest hat because you may just win the prize for the best hat contest! Tickets are $20.00 and include food and tea.
